   Hi Keith,
I hope the party finished up ok...
Given the impending Christmas holiday, I figured I better finish this earlier, rather than,
later. So I've put this together whilst my in-laws are out shopping.
Its about 1.5 word pages w/ a couple suggested possible figures and numerous references
(most of these I'm sure you're already familiar with).
I tried to cover most of the points I think are pretty important. A lot of this derives
from my review paper w/ Phil, and the J. Climate paper w/ the bunch of us, but I've also
tried to cover a bit about the von Storch issue, and I've tried to be balanced. I hope I've
   succeeded.
Anyway, I hope this is of help. Please don't hesitate to let me now if I can be of any
further assistance, either officially or unofficially...
thanks again, and happy holidays to you and yours...

Mike, I have just come back from what was a pretty compulsory attendance at the CRU
christmas dinner - I am reasonably sober but also I am greatly relieved and grateful to
see your message - but further to that I would like to say that I was a little doubtful
at first , but now realise that it would be great and stimulating to work more closely
with you in a wider context, and I really look forward to future collaboration . I
recently gave you a great reference anyway for some job that I can not remember - are
     you going?
Anyway , hope we get this workshop off the ground , and develop what I think could be a
great group of people , along wit Phi,Ray,Malcolm etc
     thanks again

     Hi Keith,
I'd be happy to do that. Will work on something over the next couple days,

how about you try to draft half an IPCC page on the simulations of the last 2000 years -
I would be lifting loads anyway from your papers? Seriously - we are allowed to ask
people and I would like to asl you

     HI Keith,
Thanks--yes, this would seem like a daunting task this time. For the '01 report, not so
much had been done (in fact, there wasn't a single modeling study of the past millennium
published, when we began drafting the report). Now there are probably 20 different
simulations (published or in press), and an almost equal number of reconstructions...
I don't envy your task--but as you know, I'm happy to help out wherever I can.
Looking forward to hearing back from you next week. Clearly, you'll have earned a well
     needed break for the holidays!

     thanks Mike
truth is the subject is so vast -reducing down to 4 pages will be a nightmare - so
anything preliminary and then focused input from selected people is probably the best
way forward . Will not get anything to you til next week though - thanks again

     Hi Keith,
I'm hoping the materials I sent you were straightforward enough that they were of some
help w/ the outline you mentioned?
I'm heading out on the road (travelling up to New England) saturday, and will be busy w/
meetings, packing, etc. tomorrow afternoon, so tomorrow morning is probably my last
chance to get back to you until next week (I should have email again next Monday).
     talk to you soon,
     Mike
