Dear Members of the RAPID Steering Committee,

The launch of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and the
Arctic Coring Expedition will take place at The Royal Society in London
on Thursday 3rd June 2004.

The event will consist of a morning session to showcase the UK launch
of IODP, explaining through a series of presentations the history of
ocean drilling and why it is so important, including a keynote address
by Lord Oxburgh. The afternoon will be dedicated to the Arctic Coring
Expedition, which is scheduled for late summer 2004. This expedition
aims to provide the first detailed climate history of the Arctic Ocean,
spanning back to the beginning of the ice ages and potentially back to
50 million years ago. This is the first scientific operation that will
attempt to collect cores in a sea of moving ice sheets, and will use a
fleet of icebreakers. An agenda for the meeting is attached to this
message.

I do hope you will be able to join us at this important event. There
is no charge to attend the conference but numbers are limited. Please
contact Vista Events by email (nerc@vistaevents.co.uk) or by fax (020
8542 9333) as soon as possible if you would like to attend the launch.
Vista will send you joining instructions and further information.

If you would like more information about the event, please do not
hesitate to call Helen Bell on 01793 411749 or Kate Royse on 0115
9363456. Information on the Arctic Coring Expedition is available from
Andy Kingdon on 0115 936 3415.

We hope to see you there!
