     Dear Mike,
I followed up on the items you highlighted in EnvSheet 19...
     1) The summer placements in Whitehall look very promising and I would
recommend we try to pursue it.
Applicants are asked to submit research proposals for a 2 month project over
the summer designed to related to any area of Government Departmental
policy - in our case something related to either DETR or MAFF (DTI are not
involved) - or one of their existing research programmes. The grant is
10,000 for two months PLUS reasonable accommodation/travel expenses.
Applicants have to commit to spending at least four weeks at the Department
     concerned.
The application material does not look too arduous - a document containing a
full description of the proposed research project and methodology, the
project's relevance to policy formulation, a review of the current
state-of-the-art in the topic area, a CV and the proposed dates. The
deadline for applications to reach the Treasury is 26 March 2001.
Note that the web URL given in Envsheet is wrong - it should be
     [1]http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/placements2001.
     2) The Scottish Executive healthcare PhD studentships are only open to
higher education institutions in Scotland - therefore none of the Tyndall
     Partners are eligible.
Let me know if you want to pursue the Whitehall thing further.
     Gillie
