   2. SUMMER PLACEMENTS IN WHITEHALL
The Government is keen to strengthen links with the research community to encourage their
involvement in policy making. Summer placements in Whitehall for researchers will be
available starting in June 2002. Applicants are invited to submit research projects (either
theoretical or applied) that are relevant to policy formulation. Proposals should identify
emerging policy issues or increase our understanding of existing ones in areas of concern
to Whitehall Departments, whose priorities can be found in the website mentioned below.
Successful applicants will undertake to carry out at least two months of research under
their proposal, of which at least four weeks must be spent within the relevant Department,
preferably during the summer of 2002. Each placement will carry a grant of 10,000 plus
reasonable travel and accommodation expenses to cover the period spent with the Department
concerned. Applications should be sent by 16th February 2002 to the relevant Department.
