     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
     January 18, 2002
JANUARY 28TH PRESS BRIEFING TO RELEASE STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY AND ANNOUNCE
CREATION OF NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE CLIMATE CHANGE INITIATIVE
OAKLAND, Calif.A diverse group of twenty-seven U.S. environmental justice,
climate justice, religious, policy and advocacy groups will announce their
unification and issue a call of action to the Bush Administration and
Congress on climate change at a press briefing to be held in New York City
     on Monday, January 28.
WHAT: The coalition, called the Environmental Justice and Climate Change
(EJCC) Initiative, will hold a press briefing to announce their unification,
marking the first time such groups have united to advance one agenda on
     climate change.
WHO: The keynote speakers are the EJCC Initiative Co-Chairs: Beverly Wright,
executive director of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice at
Xavier University and Ruben Solis, director of the Southwest Workers Union.
Also speaking is EJCC Initiative member Art Ivanoff, environmental advisor
for the Native Village of Unalakleet.
WHY: To urge President Bush and Congressional leaders to take immediate and
just steps on climate change policy. People of color, indigenous people,
low-income people and workers bear a disproportionate impact of climate
change. As such, they are the first victims of government inaction,
corporate abuse, and negligent public policy. The EJCC Initiative will fight
to ensure the fair treatment of people of all races and economic groups in
the implementation and enforcement of environmental protection laws.
     WHEN: Monday, January 28, 2002 from 12:30 p.m.2:30 p.m. A reception will
follow directly after the press briefing (all World Summit on Sustainable
     Development (WSSD) attendees are invited).
WHERE: The Millennium Hotel New York, One United Nations Plaza, New York, NY
The twenty-seven environmental justice and climate justice grassroots
organizations that have joined the EJCC Initiative are: Asian Pacific
