    Tom,
Here's the shorter version with b/w figures submitted to JGR in early August. No word on
it yet. The ERA-40 people know what's wrong with their Reanalysis and what needs to be
   done
to improve it. They need a lot more of the surface data and sondes for the pre-1979 period
when the next generation of Reanalysis is done (~2009 is the plan). ERA-40 also need
to get their system running in real time and not stopping at the end of 2001.
A lot of work needs to be done on the input data and it would be good o highlight this
in anything you write. NCEP needs to be convinced of the need. Some there (Kalnay for
example) think it is OK and what they see is real. The ERA-40 people know there is a lot
of scope for improvement and they didn't have the resources to work much more on the data
in 1999 and 2000. They also know they screwed the tropics with some incorrect scaling of
one set of satellite data, but didn't have a machine to rerun things.
    Cheers
    Phil

The attached version of the paper has just been submitted electronically to
JGR-Atmospheres. It's essentially as sent to you a couple of weeks ago, modified to
include Phil's latest comments and adjusted to bring footnotes into the main text, which
is JGR's preference. I also shortened the abstract to get within 250 words, which is a
requirement I read somewhere, although when I got to that bit electronically it offered
     me a 450-word limit.
I was obliged to suggest four reviewers as part of the submission process. I went (quite
possibly unwisely) for Kalnay, Kanamitsu, Trenberth and Karl. Kalnay and Trenberth/Karl
represent the two sides of the Kalnay&Cai discussion, and Kana knows the NCEP reanalysis
but can give a more independent view than Eugenia.
     Best regards
     Adrian
