Dear Mike,
The discussions I had with you and John Schnellnhuber yesterday were very
useful ,and I look forward to the symposium on longterm frameworks for
Climate Change policy.
I think that leaves just one loose end-the matter of how Tyndall Centre used
the term "Contraction and Convergence".You may not have been aware that is a
specific proposal for longterm climate change policy, and that Aubrey Meyer
at GCI has nursed it along for nearly a decade now , against often bitter
attacks from obvious and not-so-obvious oppononents.
I believe it is an idea whose time is arriving, as obviously did the Royal
Commission on Environmental Pollution and I understand the Government's
Energy Policy Review will reflect that. Separately, Aubrey has sent you the
briefing document which helped to persuade hard-headed financiers in the
UNEP Finance Initiatives to commend the C&C policy at COP 7 .
May I suggest that if you retain mention of "C&C" it should be attributed to
the GCI. Alternatively, you could generalise the reference to "longterm
climate change policy".
May I also say that I am pleased at the way that Tyndall is developing- I am
sure that John's difficulties must have placed many additional burdens on
you, which you have handled very effectively
Best wishes
Andrew Dlugolecki
