Dear Phil

I have been working on Tahiti MSLP over the last few days, just checking
the French sources with those from WWW and others. I have also got hold of
ten years of Papeete hourly MSLP, so if we have monthly values for any time
of the day, I will be able to extend the series now. Below is where I have
got to, which is all from French sources.

I'll summarise where we got to in June 1992, to refresh your memory.

>From 1924 (and before) the site is the Military Hospital until July 1931.
This data series had 1.6 hPa subtracted from most months, with the data
series you got from M. Auzeneau.

The next station at Hamuta (from April 1932 to January 1934 also had 1.6
hPa subtracted from it.

With the 1.6 hPa subtracted from it, the readings are in the expected range
for Papeete.

My question is this: the readings are averages of four readings a day
(daytime max + min and nightime max + min). This way of calculating
exactly equals the mean from 24 hourly observations. I am wondering what
the 1.6 hPa factor is, as both the Military Hospital and Hamuta are
cirturally at sea-level.

>From January 1935 onwards, the French sources are entirely consistent with
those in WWW.

Finally, the task now is to go back and find monthly values (can now be any
hour) to recheck the series. I have what you sent me from Krebs on
"Meteorogische etc von Papeete auf Tahite 1976 - 1891". However, it does
not reveal the hour(s) of observation. I also have Hildebrandsson's
table from 1876 - 1884, but again, this does not appear to reveal the hours
of observation.

Any illumination on this information would be most useful. I will also
check up the hours of observations from the Tahiti Messenger, and
cross-check a sample month that is common to all of these three sources.

Let me know if you have any ideas or comments.

Thanks.

Below is the Papeete series I have so far.

How was summer??

Regards

Jim
