   Programme

   THE SUPERGEN INITIATIVE
   `Sustainable Power Generation and Supply'

A first call for expressions of interest for participation in Research Consortia
   Closing Date: 5pm Friday 14^th December 2001

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) hereby invites expressions
of interest from those wishing to participate in consortia of eligible academic
institutions, working with appropriate stakeholders and users, to undertake studies in the
challenges of a sustainable power generation and supply infrastructure for the 21^st
century. This invitation incorporates research under the following themes:

    Electricity networks and grid connection
    Biomass and biofuels
    Marine energy
    Hydrogen technology.

These themes have been identified as being of key strategic importance for this, the first
   call of the SUPERGEN initiative.

Up to 5 million will be made available for this first call. A consortium funding package
will be expected to include EPSRC support alongside funding from other research users or
funding agencies. Funding will be awarded for periods of up to four years and no more than
one consortium will be funded in each theme under this first call. A consortium could
either follow a `hub and spoke' model centred at one institution, or will be a virtual
centre formed from a number of institutions.

Theme 1 - Future Network Technologies
Theme 2 - Biomass, Biofuels and Energy Crop Utlization
   Theme 3 - Marine Energy
Theme 4 - Towards a Sustainable Hydrogen Economy
