   Hi Keith,

I understand that you are busy, so there is no real rush.

I am also still keen to do any more tightening on the paper if you feel it necessary.

I would rather have it in Holocene than have to re-submit to another journal.

Just a quick question on an entirely new topic.

I have been working with John Topham (the Surrey Violin dater) and identified a grouping in
his data that comes from high elevations in south-east Germany and the Austrian Alps.

I hope to write a paper with him to assess the use of "violin" tree-ring data for
   dendroclimatic purposes.

I have in fact a preliminary series that goes back to the late 13th century.

This series shows surprising similarities in trend from 1856-1950 with June/July mean
temperatures. After that we see the inevitable divergence.

However, I was wondering if there is any gridded temperature data for maximum temperatures
   for that region.

I have Phil Jones gridded mean temperature anomalies, but would like to test my ideas of a
maximum temperatures signal with these data also. It could compliment the story in the
   Holocene paper very nicely?

   Do such data exist?

   thanks for you time

   Rob
