     Dear Council members,
We have had communciation from NERC informing us of their intention to
formalise their links to the Foreign and Commonwelath Office through a
     NERC/FCO Concordat agreement.
As part of this process they have requested the following information from
     us:
     1) current work been undertaken by contract for the FCO

We are working with the Polar Regions section of FCO in producing a forward look into how
the UK research effort in the Arctic is organised and whether it is contributing to the
UK's strategic interests in the region. Small facilitating grant.

     2) Areas where we may have expertise/facilities/capabilties/data of interest
     to FCO

Tyndall's work is of potential relevance in the following areas:
   - our work contributes to elaborating the underlying principles and objectives of the
UNFCCC, an international policy commitment of the UK
   - our involvement in capacity building in developing countries intersects with some
   priorities within the FCO
   - our work on climate change, equity and justice has clear relevance for the evolution of
UK international climate policy; we are running a seminar on this topic in 2003 and will
   invite FCO participation
   - our work on global modelling and adaptation is relevant for identifying potential
environmental stress 'hot spots' around the world, which have implications for political
   stability

     3) Details of any staff with formal links to FCO

John Ashton, Head of Environmental Policy Division at FCO, is a member of Tyndall Centre
Advisory Board. We are in contact with Neil Gilbert in the Polar Regions Section.

Please could you send me by next Wednesday 29th May a short reply, detailing
your response to any of these questions. If you don't have any relevant
information to add, please just let me know this by the deadline so that I
can compile a comprehensive response to NERC.
     Warm regards,
     Alex Haxeltine
